Catch up with The World Without a Future, on sale for .99 NOW! Here's a special release day reveal of Chapter 1!!

Chapter 1.
Chapter 1. Broken Pieces
She hasn’t cried. She doesn’t cry for me—but I know how fragile she is.
I want to break her. I want to push her hard enough to see her shatter. I want to see the shards of her on the ground.
How fucking beautiful would she be, when she put herself back together? She would. Nurrin is too stubborn to do anything but survive.
Nurrin is a first, born to a world of death. She is innocent of the life before the change. She has never known anything but Hale Halls, razor wire, and walls. She has never known she could be anything but a survivor.
I watch the sun rising over the canyon. In another world, people might have exclaimed over the beauty, stared at it in wonder.
To me, the red-washed sky means only one thing: it’s almost time to leave.
I glance over my shoulder. She retreated to the sleeping area a few hours ago, after we fought over leaving immediately. I think there is a part of her that hopes Collin will come back. A supply run wouldn’t be completely unjustified.
My lips twist.
Collin wouldn’t leave the Hole, not unless he had to. Not when he knew that it’s the only place I would take Nurrin. He’s gone because something is wrong.

ANGIE SANDRO'S A ZOMBIE?

I haven't done any writing for two weeks. I don't feel up to tackling the new story wiggling in my brain like a maggot after rotting meat. Too gross? Sorry, but it's the truth. I'm still brain dead from the revision. I want to start a new WIP, but I still haven't fleshed out all of the details.

The major one being whether I want to set this in the 1970's. It feels like I should because it has a dark edge that the modern world wouldn't support as easily. Cell phones, internet, computers ... these sorts of conveniences make the story I want to tell less plausible. It does mean I have to do a lot of research on the era. I also wonder whether there’s even a market for this book. Another area of research (I love research, lol).

Since I haven't made up my mind, I've put the story on hold. Which means its grip will get tighter and tighter. In a couple of weeks, I'll be walking around with this dazed look on my face and I'll be at risk of a head shot.

Angie Sandro after a night of editing.

I’ll probably end up writing it the way the story wants to be told. I don't have much control once the characters start talking in my head. I just go with the flow, then edit like crazy.

On Sunday, I'll watch The Walking Dead to see if my favorite character survives. *crosses fingers* because nobody is safe on this show.

I hope you all have a happy weekend.

SHARING OUR VOICES- CATERINA TORRES

I would like to welcome a special guest to Sharing Our Voices. Her source of inspiration is apocalyptic in nature...or, I guess in opposition to nature would be a better description since the natural order does not apply in this case. Please say hello to Caterina Torres.

First I just want to say thanks for letting me guest post on your blog. It’s so great to share my experiences as a writer with others, especially what inspires me to write what I write about. What do I write about? Oh, you didn’t hear?

I’m sure you’re probably expecting some sort of deep, heartfelt reason behind what pushes me to write. But honestly, I write because I want to. Plain and simple. I love imagining a life outside my own; something that’s different from the daily grind of working 9-5, cooking dinner, cleaning the house, being a wife, etc. And I want to evoke an emotion from my readers. I want them to be so engrossed in the story, they forget about their own lives.

I didn’t experience something life changing. I don’t live in poverty. I have a great husband, a roof over my head, food in my stomach, and loving family and friends. I hope this post doesn’t come off as rude, but I got bored with regular life and thought, “Wouldn’t it be cool if the apocalypse hit and zombies took over?” Truly, it would be a horrendous and scary experience, but the thought also excites me. No rules, no laws, no reason to go to work anymore. People’s true selves would come out as we band together to survive.

So I guess what inspired me to write my first book, Zombie Whisperer, was because real life wasn’t exciting enough. I kept coming to work, expecting something different, but getting the same old, same old: People sitting at their desks, typing away, ignoring everyone else, and waiting until it’s time to go home so they can repeat the entire thing the next day.

And if you really think about it, we’re already zombies in this world. We go through the same motions day in and day out until…what? My books help me escape that reality so I can create my own and share it with others.

She can speak to the dead. Only problem is, they’re still walking around.

After enduring a week-long flu, Jane Smith wakes to find out a terrorist organization has spread a deadly virus over the nation, changing anyone who’s infected into the walking dead. With no choice but to flee her home, Jane teams up with her boyfriend, Josh Williams, as they venture to find something better than the desolate land that was once called the home of the brave and the land of the free.

Driving across the country, Jane encounters some of the newly turned and finds she can hear their thoughts inside her head. Before she can understand her link to the undead, Jane and Josh are captured by the terrorists responsible for the virus because of one special reason: they know she can communicate with the infected
and they want her to be a part of their fight to take down the rest of the world.

Afraid for their lives, Jane must decide if she should join the terrorists or use her new found powers to stop them.

40 WEEKS OF ME- Week 3, Dreams

I have extremely vivid dreams. They feel like I've been dropped onto a movie set. They're full color, and typically, involve lots of action. It's rare for me to have a nightmare. As in years. If I read a book or watch a television series that really draws me in, I'll probably dream about it.

This is an example of a typical dream. I’m telling you about it because it is one of my favorite dreams. I woke up feeling super proud of myself for handling this situation in this manner, even though, wow totally bizarre.

It was a combination Game of Thrones and Walking Dead dream. I was fighting zombies with my zombie fighting crew. I had a really large sword which I used to decapitate zombies with one swing. There was a bunch of running from zombie hordes.

In the fateful battle, I saved my crew but took a bite to the shoulder in the process. I knew the risks. I knew the result. I handed my partner my sword and gave a rousing speech about struggle and perseverance.

"Night gathers, and now my watch begins. It shall not end until my death. I shall take no wife, hold no lands, father no children. I shall wear no crowns and win no glory. I shall live and die at my post. I am the sword in the darkness. I am the watcher on the walls. I am the shield that guards the realms of men. I pledge my life and honor to the Night's Watch, for this night and all the nights to come." ―Jon Snow and Samwell Tarly recite the Night's Watch oath, by George R.R. Martin

Then, I knelt in front of a stump and laid my head across it (think when Ned Stark executed the deserter from the Night's Watch).

I closed my eyes. The wind blew back my hair as the sword stuck. My breath caught as the edge of the blade sliced through my neck.

And I woke up.

So, to answer the question a lot people have wondered about—no, you don’t die in real life if you die in your dream.

THE WALKING DEAD

My father and I were talking about television series we’ve been watching: True Blood, Game of Thrones. Our tastes are almost identical, not surprising since I’m his daughter. I asked whether he’d watched season two of The Walking Dead, because I’m pretty sure I’ve talked about how much I love this show.

Surprise! He’d never heard of it. How in the world…Zombies! Never seen… What?
*insert eye rolling and face palm *

Dad, this post is dedicated to you.

THE WALKING DEAD is based on the comic book series of the same name. It tells the story of a small group of survivors living in the aftermath of a zombie apocalypse (start stocking up on survival gear people). The survivors search for a safe haven away from the hordes of the undead.

I like this series because it is character based. Sure there are rotting zombie kills, but I like how the characters are the focal point. The writers of the series take care to write them in a way that we empathize with their struggle. The series wouldn’t be so powerful if the audience didn’t connect with them and care whether they lived or died.

Coming off of the season two finale, I was curious about the ending (no spoilers here, folks). My husband happens to be a huge comic book geek, and he mentioned he had purchased The Walking Dead Comic—95 issues—downloaded into my iPad.

Heaven.

In my opinion, the comic is better than the series in scope of how big they can go with the plot and characters. In comics, you can kill of whomever you choose if it appropriate to the storyline. No actors or contracts, no budget. However, I like the gritty reality of watching the action on the big screen.

The series and the comics are excellent. They’re also far enough removed from each other that if you’ve read the comic the television series still comes off fresh. There are characters in the comic that haven’t made an appearance yet in the series. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a Tyreese appearance.

What do you think? Love the show? Hate it? How does it compare to the comic. What characters from the comics are you hoping to see in the series?
